One of the things I tried to deal with my hair loss was PRP, or platelet-rich plasma. There is some encouraging evidence out there so I thought I’d give it a try.
I had it done in the Czech Republic by a doctor in Prague called Miroslava Abdulgani and it was a horror.
I did overall six cycles of PRP over a three-month period in the winter of 2018/2019. The gaps between the treatments were about 2 weeks to a month.
They draw your blood from your vein, separate the platelet-rich plasma in a machine, and inject that into your scalp. The chemical components present in the plasma are believed to boost your hair follicles. I do not know which method of separating the plasma she used.
All this treatment did to me was the worst bout of acute shedding I have ever had. I was virtually raining hair from my head. At the worst, I may have been loosing like 600 hairs a day. It was absolutely frightening.
The doctor wasn’t able to tell me when that was going to stop and in fact, didn’t even reply to an email in which I inquired about the expectations.
There definitely wasn’t an improvement after this worsening.
The most disrespectful thing about this doctor was when she told me that it’s not working because I was not visualising it working…
I have CPTSD (a result of my childhood in an abusive family and a later relationship with a narcissist), but this cosmetic surgeon was essentially blaming me for not being relaxed and OK and therefore causing myself my own hair loss. Insensitive is the word that comes to mind.
Hilariously, she also at some point started pitching a hair transplant to me if things get too bad in the future even though existing literature is hesitant about hair transplants in women.
My impression was that this particular doctor was not very well versed in diagnosing hair loss conditions and the biology of hair. She seemed like she had heard the term telogen effluvium for the first time in her life from me and didn’t even seem to know that hair has a three-month response cycle.
This is obviously just my experience. I certainly cannot recommend this provider for their attitude and the technique only caused me harm.
